The Flash: Stride

The flash is easily the most challenging hero to draw. I mean all the guy does is run. How can one present such a general concept in a novel way?

Falling Water

Last Monday was maybe the last 70 degree day here in the region so I made the most of it. Took a ride down to Frank Lloyd Wrights falling waters. Strange thing it's in the same region I pass through on the way to DC in the Laurel highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania. Wonderful area with amazing hills and valleys with flowing roads that beg to be explored. Anyhow...the house was designed for the Kaufmann's the of the Kaufmann departement stores...The owner, his wife and Son who was an apprentice of Wright himself. I must confess it's wonderful so see such and example of creativity; of art as shelter. You'd think being wealthy the Kaufmanns would demand a soft plush home, but this was the opposite...not that it wasn't posh, it was, only in a fundamentalist way, void of excesses. To most the house may even seem intrusive. Narrow hallways and stairwells with sandstone protruding from every angle. However, you feel as if every step you take is an opportunity to learn about composition, lighting, theme, harmony, etc. The shear wonder of the place lies in the details. I can imagine how intoxicating it was to design and build. I'm sure problems and ideas were created as each was solved. You are met with recurring themes and accents, from the numerous waterfalls to the trees. The most amazing thing is that this was built 1939, yet so modern, we still haven't caught up to it.

Future Rich Chick

Commission for a friend. Bit of a spin on Scifi space explorer genre. For this piece the spin is a retro take on the future. I love the 50s and 60s vision of the future...from their concept cars to the space ships. Things had such grand designs. Everything was epic and driven by art over function.

Prime vs Storm Shadow

What?

The Flash: Rhythm

The objective is to capture the rhythm of running. Not just one step, but the back and forth of the limbs. The interplay and alternate work of each step, the tempo of the bobbing head up down forth and back. I suppose with the flash it would translate to a vibration. His expression is tense, willful, persistent. The quest to stop time is a great challenge...is it possible? What lies on other side? He's determined...

The Flash: Drive

Test to understand the mechanism of running. I'm trying to use the pencil strokes to evoke the action and feel of the strokes of the the moving muscles. When the sprinter is in full stride he tends to look slow and less dramatic, therefore this study is an effort to capture the drive phase of a sprinter. The drive is almost akin to an explosion of effort, lending itself to wildly elongated limbs and contrasting motions. The blue lines are used to convey the kinetic motion of the the limbs.

Coincidentally when I used to run track in high school the drive phase was my worst part. Mostly because I wasn't even aware of the drive phase. My overall speed was great, but I used to suffer a lot on the starts, consequently having to play catch up for the rest of the race. My races were fun to watch I was told.

The Flash: faster

Companion piece to the previous. No belabored or contrived lines. Faster.

Taryn Card

More indigo cards. Taryn was a challenge, it was hard to get her likeness right. You know, some people just have faces that are hard to find the thing to hold onto that makes them distinct. I still feel I'm ways off, but this will do.
